Raver-Girl Plants And A Quilting Spree

I enjoy a good pumpkin-spiced something every so often, but even more enduring: my love for cacio e pepe. I could eat it year-round and any time of day (ie, I’ve definitely nursed a morning hangover or two in bed with remainders from a deliciously fun night-out). Alas, I had no intentions of sleeping on Daily Provisions’ seasonal, fried-to-order cacio e pepe cruller, which arrived warm from the kitchen, and was gone in a New York City minute. The limited-run flavor was only available through this past Tuesday, but given the lack of cronut-esque lines, I’m ready to dash back for more of whatever’s on deck, especially if it involves more unexpected spins on salt and savory.

The shacket is this season’s new teddy coat, and the versatile army-style jackets that everyone was wearing about six or seven years ago have morphed into quilted, boxy jackets, typically in shades of the same army green. Equally versatile and just as popular, these styles are cropping up everywhere from Mango and & Other Stories, to designer brands like Burberry and Rag & Bone. I was actually about to purchase one myself, but my friend Melissa gave me pause when she showed up to breakfast the other day wearing this exuberant piece from Rachel Comey’s recent Target collaboration. It’s also quilted, and while I don’t want to necessarily cop Melissa’s style, it feels more appealing than looking like everyone else—literally. Who am I kidding, I’ll probably get both.

My corner flower guy Vicente and I have an arrangement: I keep him fed with baked goods, and he pretends not to be horrified when I tell him that I’ve killed yet another houseplant. Instead he just picks out something new and attractive, assures me it’s lower-maintenence than the one before it, and sends me on my way…probably murmuring some prayer of hope for the poor thing as I carry it home. I’m determined to keep this one, whom I’ve named Ty, alive and well. She is in fact a Ty Plant, and has all the makings of a fuchsia-haired skater girl. It’s been one week, and so far we’re raving.

Shockingly overdue, Jane Hall’s book Woman Made: Great Women Designers is an encyclopedic compendium covering over 200 groundbreaking and significant moments in design. I’m especially intrigued by Hall’s choice to organize her subjects alphabetically versus chronologically, which creates an interesting juxtaposition of eras and styles, as well as the figures behind them. Personally, I think it tracks with how so many of us approach design, even in everyday ways. My own apartment, for example, bears a mish-mash aesthetic that draws from various influences and time periods that feels more layered than loony (at least I think so).

I woke up to the hissing of my radiators one chilly morning this week. Ready or not—and I’m not—winter’s coming, you guyyyyys! I don’t know what’s worse: the cold, drying weather outside, or the radiator heat that has me waking up every morning with parchment paper skin. This season, I’m not !@#-ing around: cashmere and super-rich, mushroom-derived sleep masks are my MO.
