Welcome to A Few Good Mentions, a weekly (or so) toss-up of five random, share-worthy things I might come across, see, read, do, or eat in a given week. You can find me on Instagram, and my website, which I try my best to update with latest published works. Ok, let’s go!
1.
One of the many things I love about my incessantly curious, close friend Patrick, is how he won’t just subconsciously succumb to a new trend or phenomenon, but rather he’ll do his own little deep dives into their origins and uses, before figuring out how to best apply them for himself. Even better when he briefs me with the abridged version of what he’s learned. Most recently, he told me all about his forays into the controversial, and heavily-discussed world of AI, a research mission that resulted in this eerily spot-on newsletter.
2.
Mad for plaid: Given my heritage, Scottish tartans have long been a part of my fashion consciousness, both in terms of wardrobe (especially as a child), and understanding what they represent. No trips to Scotland currently on the horizon for this lassie, but I encourage anyone headed that way to try to catch this all-encompassing exhibition at the V&A Dundee, which I recently read about in this New York Times story.

Look, it’s always going to rain, especially this time of year. So gear up! Invest in a great trench! Find yourself a fabulous and sturdy umbrella (unless you’re the sort who constantly loses them…in which case, invest in a handful of serviceable, decently-priced umbrellas). And for footwear that won’t make you puddle-shy, I love a good pair of galoshes. Honestly, I don’t know how I first came across these ones—and on a tractor supply site, no less—but I’m all about them. There’s also a taller, above-the-ankle version.
4.
If you know, you know—and even so, there’s always more to discover about Bonnie Cashin, the American fashion designer credited for pioneering the early sportswear movement. Did you know she’s behind the dressing and styling technique we all refer to as ‘layering’? I did not, until I started researching for this recent story I wrote for Harper’s Bazaar.

And for your next Friday or Saturday night (or really, any night)… Is blind dating a dead-and-done relic of the past? Given how easy it is to just look someone up on Google or social media, most signs point to YES. But then Kinderhook Bottle Shop went and cleverly spun the whole thing on its head. Personally, I’d love to meet a #notbasic Spaniard who’s down for a low-key chill. Cheers to that! ;)
Bonnie forever❤️
